Oh, Mati!
Part 1: Arrival and First Impressions
I arrived in Mati City, Davao Oriental after a long and bumpy bus ride from Davao City. As soon as I stepped off the bus, I was struck by the serene and laid-back atmosphere of the city. The streets were lined with palm trees and there was a cool sea breeze blowing in from the nearby coast.
My first stop was the Mati Tourism Office, where I picked up a map and some brochures about the local attractions. The staff were friendly and helpful, and gave me some great tips on where to go and what to see.
Next, I headed to my hotel, which was located right on the beachfront. The hotel was simple but clean and comfortable, with a great view of the sea. I spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beach, watching the waves and soaking up the sun.
In the evening, I went out to explore the city. I walked along the waterfront promenade, where locals were strolling and fishing. The atmosphere was lively but relaxed, with families and friends enjoying each other's company.
I also visited the Mati Park and Baywalk, a beautifully landscaped park with a playground, picnic area, and outdoor stage. There were vendors selling local snacks and drinks, and a group of young musicians playing traditional music.
Overall, my first impressions of Mati City were extremely positive. The city felt safe, friendly, and welcoming, with a strong sense of community and a deep connection to nature. I couldn't wait to see what else this beautiful city had to offer.
Part 2: Masao Floating Cottage, Subangan Museum, and Dahican Beach
On my second day in Mati City, I decided to explore some of the city's other attractions. My first stop was Masao Floating Cottage, a popular tourist destination located about 20 minutes from the city center.
The Masao Floating Cottage is a small wooden hut built on stilts over the water. It offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding sea and nearby islands. Visitors can rent the cottage for a few hours or for the entire day, and enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and fishing in the crystal-clear waters below.
After spending some time at the floating cottage, I headed to the Subangan Museum, a cultural and natural history museum located in the heart of Mati City. The museum showcases the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Davao Oriental, with exhibits on the province's indigenous peoples, flora and fauna, and geological formations.
I was particularly impressed by the museum's collection of artifacts from the Mandaya tribe, one of the indigenous groups in Davao Oriental. The intricate weavings, carvings, and jewelry on display were a testament to the tribe's rich artistic tradition and cultural heritage.
After the museum, I headed to Dahican Beach, a long stretch of white sand beach located about 8 kilometers from the city center. The beach is famous for its crystal-clear waters, soft sand, and strong waves, making it a popular destination for surfing and skimboarding.
I spent the afternoon lounging on the beach, reading a book, and watching the local surfers catching some waves. The beach was dotted with small restaurants and bars serving fresh seafood and cold drinks, and there was a lively atmosphere with music and laughter.
As the sun began to set, I took a long walk along the beach, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the peaceful sound of the waves. It was the perfect way to end another memorable day in Mati City.
